Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty

A "tummy tuck," or abdominoplasty, is a type of reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. It is used to remove fat and excess loose skin from the belly after significant weight loss, as well as to tighten muscles that have split or become loose after pregnancy.
A stomach tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a type of cosmetic surgery used to enhance the appearance of the abdomen. It may entail tightening the abdominal muscles and getting rid of extra fat, stretch marks, and loose skin. The goal is to eliminate any extra skin on the abdomen that cannot be eliminated by exercise, such as skin that has been left there after a significant weight loss or pregnancy.

Tummy Tuck Procedures

You have two options for your procedure—a full stomach tuck or a partial or micro tummy tuck—after speaking with your cosmetic surgeon.

  • Whole abdominoplasty: In order to hide the scar as much as possible, the plastic surgeon places it very low in the "bikini line" during this procedure. To create a flat, contoured belly, extra skin and fat are removed, and occasionally the muscles are restored.
  • A smaller scar is needed for a partial or mini abdominoplasty, which targets just one area of the abdomen. Endoscopic-assisted surgery is an option for the surgeon because it is less intrusive and takes less time. This is only used in specific situations of weak and lax abdominal muscles, though.

Depending on which abdominoplasty procedure you will have, surgery may take anywhere from 1-3 hours. You will receive general anesthesia or intravenous “twilight” sedation. This surgery may require an overnight stay, as well as standing and sleep modifications for up to a week. You will have drainage tubes in place in order to remove any excess fluid that your body produces. This is normal and the tubes will be removed over 1-3 weeks.
